The fortress-monastery of Khor Virap is located in the Ararat province, on top of a hill near the small village of Pokr Vedi.
It is one of the most famous pilgrimage sites in Armenia. St Gregory the illuminator spent 14 years improsoned in the well of the present-day monastery.
In 642 A.D Catholicos Nerses III decrees the building of a small church of St. Gevorg (George) enclosing the well.
The main church of the Monastery desicated to the Holy Mother of God (Astvatsatsinh and dating back to the 17th century stands in the middle of the fortress. The bell tower was added to the west of the church later. Since the 13th century Khor Virap Monastery has been a famous spiritual and scientific center.
